The Internet – basic concepts of the web

In this course we will present the basic concepts of the internet, or the web. You’ll learn how it works and how to draw the advantage, without being overwhelmed by technical details.

Internet in general

The functionality of the Internet in general is based on the following key concepts:

  • Network
  • Communication
  • Client
  • Server
  • Information
  • Database

The Internet is therefore a huge network in which thousands of computers (clients and servers) communicate together to share information.

The client

It is a personal computer used by ordinary people in the office, at home or anywhere else.

The server

It is often a very powerful computer installed in a data center somewhere in the world, belonging to a given company that provides computer services.
Often multiple servers are linked together to form a cluster, to provide much more power and security needed.

Information

There are volatile information, which has a very short life, such as communication by Instant Messaging for example.
Other types of information, such as the textual data, video and audio are stored permanently on hard drives and other media for data backup.
On servers, these data are organized in databases.

The database

It is a structure that helps keep the data permanently in an organized manner. Thus the data classified by: type, name, date, etc., which allows to find it quickly and easily on demand.
